Houtarou Oreki
Created by: Honobu Yonezawa
Not all mysteries involve murders, blackmails, kidnappings, and other gruesome stuff. Some are just mundane occurences that pique our natural curiosities. These are the type of mysteries Houtarou Oreki and the Classic Literature Club deal with.
Oreki is lazy believes in conserving his energy. He doesn't really like to participate in any club or have any hobbies and is set
in spending his high school life passively. This all changes when he is encouraged by his sister to join the Classic Literature Club
and meets Chitanda Eru. A girl whose curiosity somehow drives Oreki to use his hidden wits and deductive skills to find an answer that
satisfies her. The Classic Literature Club is later joined by two of Oreki's friends. Satoshi Fukube, self-proclaimed database,
and Oreki's best friend. And Mayaka Ibara, a mutual friend of Oreki's and Satoshi's. Together they solve mysteries and
strange occurences they stumble upon in their everyday life.
Hyouka started as a series of novels by Honobu Yonezawa but its most popular incarnation is the Kyoani anime adaptation. i would love to read the novels to see how it plays differently from the anime and experience Honobu Yonezawa's writing but unfortunately, there are no official english translations. Hence, i would just be writing about the anime adaptation for this page.
Hyouka is a really comfortable show. The premise, the setting, the characters, it's all really peaceful and the animation is also really satisfying to watch. i higly recommend this if you want to watch something light and fun. i guess i also have quite the nostalgia for this show... i watched this about a year before my high school years began iirc and man, i remember injecting Oreki's (and similarly Hikigaya Hachiman's) detached introverted loner personality into my own (word of advice, pls don't). My only gripe with it now as i get older, is that i've grown to dislike the cutesy kyoani designs but i can't really argue that it's not effective since those designs helped boost the source material's popularity (especially with Oreki's design apparently being quite popular with the female audience). But i still sometimes fantasize of an alternative, less-conventional, anime adaption of the novels... though it probably would be redundant since the existing anime is already really good...
Favourite Story Arcs
Here's a couple of notable story arcs in the anime that i really like.
Hyouka Anthology Arc (Eps 3-5)
Chitanda requests for Oreki's help.
Chitanda, after witnessing Oreki's abilities of deduction and mystery-solving, requests for his help in clearing up her memory as a child. She remembers asking her uncle about a book and his response scared her and made her cry. The book in question, is an issue of Hyouka Anthology Series, an anthology that was made annually by previous Classic Literature Club members.
The club gathers to solve the case.
This is the first major arc of the anime which essentially explains the title of the show. The anime does a great job of making the discussion between the club members engaging. Each member presents their own speculation of a certain event and the anime has these fun distinct abstract creative sequences for each member's interpretation.
"Does being more passionate about stuff make life more exciting or just more heartbreaking?"
The arc reaches it emotional climax as the explanation for Chitanda's reaction and the meaning of the anthology's title is revealed. It's a powerful moment that beautifully resolves as the act of Chitanda's uncle challenges Oreki's belief of maintaining a passive highschool life as he slowly begins to reflect and reconsider his priorities. This arc really works as a self-contained story which makes sense since this is the first book iirc. Fortunately, the author decide to expand on the characters and we get more fun stories from them.
Mystery Movie Arc (Eps 8-11)
The Club prepares to watch Class 2-F's short film
The Classic Lit Club is invited to a screening of Class 2-F's mystery movie for the cultural event. The movie turns out to be incomplete, class member Fuyumi Irisu explains that the club is invited to help identify the culprit of the film since the screenwriter fell ill before completing it. The club is introduced to three production members of the film who gave their own theories on who the culprit could be.
"Pathetic. Some detective I am..."
This arc not only has a strong premise, but it really does well on continuing to challenge Oreki's belief and inclinations to conserve energy. It's an arc that solidifies why Oreki needs the club in solving mysteries and how him on his own can fall to traps and miss crucial information due to his "energy conservationist" tendencies. His own personality and abilities were used against him. It's an arc with a good twist and a strong satisfying end despite Oreki's failure, the situation still resolved nicely for the participants involved.
Juumonji Arc (Eps 12-17)
Kanya festival begins!
The Kanya festival is finally here. Each of the Classic Lit Club goes off on their own adventure. Chitanda travels around the school hoping to spread and advertise their Hyouka anthology issue. Satoshi joins a quiz show to prove his 'database' knowledge. Mayaka performs her drawing duties for the manga club. And Oreki ...holds the fort as the seller of the Hyouka issues in the club room. Meanwhile, it seems that each item in certain clubs have been stolem. A card was left at each scene, signed by the thief that calls himself Juumonji...
Will the Classic Lit Club successfully bust Juumonji?
The Juumonji arc is what i consider as the penultimate arc of the show. The episodes after this feels like afterthoughts once this arc was finished. Each of the club members going off on their own adventures and how they all eventually affect each other was fun. We also got to explore the other members this time around and not just focus on Oreki or Chitanda. We get an insight on Satoshi's envy of Oreki's talent, especially since he himself prides on being a knowledgeable guy (database and all that) and is a big fan of mysteries. We got to see Mayaka outside of the club as she deals with the drama within the manga club. All of this along with an amazing ending and satisfying conclusion to the mystery, makes this my personal favourite arc.
